Women’s Golf Academy Curriculum

 

WEEK ONE

Level I – Irons

  • Review Set Up

*      Grip - two knuckles left hand, V’s to right shoulder, left thumb at 2 o’clock, right thumb at 10 o’clock, grip pressure 5 on scale of 1 – 10

*      Stance - feet shoulder wide, ball position center with irons

*      Posture - more bend from waist, let air out of knees, arms hang straight down out of shoulder socket, weight flat on feet

  • L to L Swinging Motion

*      Hands hinge on backswing and follow through, butt end of club points to ball

  • Hit Bottom of Ball

*      To make shots go up in the air, divots are necessary when ball is on grass

  • Hold Your Finish

*      Belt buckle to target, right foot pivots, hold finish for 5 seconds or until ball hits ground

*      Demonstrate an L to L Shot

*      Have Students Swing to a Tee, Then Hit a Ball

*      Class summary

 

Level II – Irons / Fuller Swing

  • Fuller Swing

*      Explain the upper body coil, have arms across chest and make simulated upper body turn

*      Have students make some practice fuller swings, then hit some shots

*      Warn them their shots may go further, but with a  bigger swing their shots may be more erratic

*      Class summary

 

Level III – Irons / Pre Shot Routine

§         Pre Shot Routine

*      Explain the importance of stress on the golf swing motion, and how a pre-shot routine can help you aim better and eliminate stress…

·         feet together

·         take grip

·         set club behind ball

·         look out at target

·         take stance (while looking out at target)

·         look back to ball

·         take a breath

·         and hit your shot

*      Have students work on pre shot routine without hitting any golf balls and observe each other’s pre shot routines without hitting ball

*      Have students hit shots utilizing their pre shot routines

*      Discuss at end of class what it feels like to use a pre shot routine

*      Class summary

 

 

WEEK TWO

Level I – Etiquette

§         Putting Green

*      where to stand

*      who putts first

*      who takes out flag

*      who puts flag back in

*      how to properly mark your golf ball and fix a ball mark,

*      play etiquette game

§         On Course

*      where to stand

*      who hits first on tee

*      who hits first in fairway

*      when is it ok to hit

*      when to yell fore

*      how do you know if you are playing too slowly

*      as a beginner: should I keep score? play by the rules? have good etiquette?

 

Level II – Rules

§         Use Rules Scholar Board to Teach Top 5 Rules (Go up to top of range to discuss)

*      Ball Out of Bounds

*      Ball Lost

*      Yellow and Red Hazard Penalty and Options

*      Ball Unplayable

*      One Clublength Free Drop from Immovable Objects (cart paths)

*      Give Level I and II Golf Knowledge Test to entire group

 

Level III – Bunkers & Lob Shots

§         Bunkers (Once per month)

*      Must have good form to get ball out of bunker

*      First goal is to get ball out, second goal is to get ball on the green, third goal is to hit shot close to flag

*      Have students come in and hit some sand out of bunker onto green

*      Show them open stance and clubface, ball forward, weight forward

*      Make V shape swing

*      For distance control:

·         = small v with easy tempo hits short bunker shot

·         = medium v with medium tempo hits medium length bunker shot

·         = big v with fast tempo hits longer bunker shot

§         Lob Shots Off Grass

*      Same concept as bunker shots

 

 

 


 

 

WEEK THREE

 

Level I - Hybrids

§         Look in a golf bag, show different lengths and lofts of clubs

§         Demonstrate the length of iron, driver and hybrid

§         Warm Up Stretching

§         Review grip, stance, posture and L to L swing

§         Ball position forward with a hybrid, more a sweep than divot

§         Demonstrate Hybrid shot

§         Have students hit some hybrid shots

 

Level II – Fairway Metal Woods

§         Explain ball position forward, more sweeping swing

§         Longer club, ball goes further, but their shots may be more erratic

§         Demonstrate fairway metal shot

§         Have students hit fairway metal shots

 

Level III – Drivers

§         Warm Up, Review grip, stance, posture, L to L swing

§         Review Hybrids, Fairway Metals

§         Explain shoulder tilt

§         Tee height is important

§         Ball position is important

§         Have students hit drivers

§         Have a contest, who can hit the driver between the lines and in the air

§         Class summary

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


WEEK FOUR

Level I – Putting

§         explain no loft on putter and importance of good putting stroke vs. hitting ball a long way  (drive for show, putt for $$dough)

§         thumbs go down grip

§         do not hinge wrists

§         1 inch (backswing and follow thru) per 1 foot of putt

§         keep head still, don’t watch putt

§         hold follow through, avoid re-coil action

§         demonstrate a short putt

§         have students hit some short putts, make sure each student is not hinging wrists

§         play putting game

 

Level II - Chipping

§         Explain difference between chip, pitch, lob

§         Explain that chipping stroke is just like putting stroke

§         Use putting style grip and swing, no wrist hinge

§         Swing club head from 5 o’clock to 7 o’clock

§         Must hit bottom of ball for shot to jump up in the air

§         Demonstrate fringe chip

§         Have students hit some chips, make sure each student is not hinging wrists

§         Play chipping game

 

Level III –  Pitching

§         Ball spends half time in the air, half time on ground rolling to flagstick

§         Have them stand on their landing area (most players aim to close to flag)

§         Review 8 o’clock to 4 o’clock swing of club head

§         Longer pitches may require 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock swing

§         Even longer pitches may require L to L motion

§         Explain how tempo and ball position affect a pitch shot

§         Class summary
